Disney to Release Swath of R-Rated Movies, Potentially Impacting Family-Friendly Image
On February 1st, Disney+ is set to integrate Hulu’s content into its platform, bringing a significant increase in R-rated movies and TV-MA-rated TV shows. The Concerned Women for America (CWA) organization has raised concerns about this change, noting that Disney+ will have over 439 R-rated movies, a massive increase from the current 19, and 425 TV-MA rated series, up from 45.
This shift marks a departure from Disney’s previous pledge in 2019 to only feature content up to a PG-13 rating on its streaming service. Many parents who relied on Disney’s promise of “family-friendly only” content feel betrayed by this move towards more mature programming.
In the past, Disney+ faced criticism for advertising the series “Dying for Sex” on its landing page, catching many families off-guard. Concerned Women for America is calling on Disney to implement stronger protections for children, such as offering a separate family-friendly tier and ensuring that parental controls are set as default.
Disney acquired full ownership of Hulu in 2023, and plans to consolidate Hulu’s content onto the Disney+ platform for a more streamlined viewing experience. This integration will include Hulu’s first NC-17 title, “Blue is the Warmest Color,” as part of the expanded library of content.
As the landscape of streaming entertainment continues to evolve, it’s essential for parents to stay informed about the type of content their children may encounter. Disney’s decision to include more mature content on its platform underscores the importance of implementing effective parental controls and exploring alternative streaming options for families seeking a safer viewing environment.
