Alex Honnold Completes Taipei 101 Climb on Netflix: Everything You Need to Know

Alex Honnold, the adventurous climber and father of two, pulled off an impressive stunt by climbing Taiwan’s Taipei 101, one of the world’s tallest buildings, without any ropes or harnesses. This daring feat was streamed live on Netflix for all to witness on Sunday, Jan. 25 (or for those in America, Saturday, Jan. 24).

Originally planned for Friday, Jan. 23, the special event was delayed by 24 hours due to weather conditions. Alex’s wife, Sanni McCandless, shared her nerves and support throughout the climb, even as she admitted to feeling like she was having a panic attack.

Having been climbing for roughly three decades, Honnold is no stranger to pushing boundaries. Previously featured in the award-winning 2018 documentary “Free Solo,” which documented his groundbreaking climb of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without any safety ropes, he shared his curiosity about the experience of climbing such a massive building like Taipei 101.

While buildings present a unique challenge due to their steep inclines compared to traditional rock faces, Honnold’s main goal remained the same: don’t fall. With a focus on having a good time and enjoying himself during the climb, he expressed his confidence and excitement about taking on this monumental challenge.

Beyond his climbing achievements, Honnold is also known for his environmental activism, having founded the Honnold Foundation in 2012 to support global solar energy initiatives. Additionally, he hosts the Climbing Gold podcast and is actively involved in promoting sustainable practices.

Following his exhilarating climb, Alex planned to celebrate by taking the elevator down, reuniting with his wife, enjoying a buffet dinner, and returning to his climbing routine. The entire Skyscraper Live event was captured and aired on Netflix for viewers to witness this incredible feat.
