Weekend Movie Reviews: Romantic Comedy, Psychological Drama, Horror/Thriller
This weekend, we’ve got a trio of exciting films and series for you to check out. First up, on Tubi, there’s a romantic comedy called “How to Lose a Popularity Contest.” Follow the story of a rebellious student and a perfectionist overachiever as they team up in the race for student body president and find unexpected feelings along the way. Film Critic Tony Toscano describes it as a breezy and light romcom that’s perfect for teens, even if it follows a familiar formula. He gives it a solid B rating.
If you’re a fan of psychological dramas, head over to Apple TV+ for “Drops of God,” a French series that follows a young woman on a quest to find the most valuable bottle of wine in the world to inherit a prestigious wine collection. Tony praises this series for its well-written mystery thriller plot, excellent acting, and stunning French countryside setting. He rates it with a top-tier A grade and notes it’s rated TV-MA.
Lastly, for those looking for thrills, “We Bury the Dead” is the horror/thriller film starring Daisy Ridley that’s currently showing in select theaters. After a catastrophic accident, a woman ventures into a quarantine zone to search for her missing husband, only to uncover a terrifying truth: the undead are becoming more aggressive, restless, and intelligent by the hour. Tony commends the film for its fresh take on zombie stories and rates it a solid B, noting that it’s a must-see for horror fans. This film is rated R.
