Greenlight Award-Winning Script and Filmmaker Revealed at ‘Ohina Labs 2025 in Kauai

Honolulu-based nonprofit ‘Ohina recently announced the winner of the 2025 Greenlight Award and the project from its annual ‘Ohina Labs.

Katelyn Chong, hailing from Kāneʻohe, Oʻahu, clinched the Greenlight for her script titled “Shop Local.” This achievement grants her production support and $10,000 in funds to bring her short film to fruition.

During the 2025 ‘Ohina Labs intensive workshops, Katelyn Chong showcased her film project. She emerged as the 2025 Greenlight Award winner with her captivating script “Shop Local.”

Another noteworthy mention goes to Sean Oketani, who received The Judges Award of $2,500 and development support for his script “Kaikamāhine.”

‘Ohina Labs 2025 offered an exceptional opportunity for current and former Hawai‘i residents to submit short screenplays. These submissions were then reviewed by leading entertainment industry professionals. Following a rigorous selection process, 10 fellows were welcomed to a free mentorship intensive that commenced in November.

Participants in ‘Ohina Labs 2025 had the privilege of being mentored by industry experts like Bryson Chun, a staff writer for “Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.” on Disney+; Mitchel Merrick, known for his work as the director/writer of “Water Like Fire” and “Kūkini”; and Bao Tran, the director/writer behind “The Paper Tigers.”
