Back to the Future star shares disappointment with film experience

Melora Hardin, known for her role as Jan Levinson on The Office, recently opened up about her experience losing the part of Jennifer Parker in Back to the Future, describing it as “a huge disappointment.” Originally cast as Marty McFly’s love interest opposite Eric Stoltz, Hardin shot several weeks of footage before the producers decided to recast the lead role with Michael J. Fox, who was shorter in height. As a result, the role of Parker went to Claudia Wells.

Reflecting on this setback, Hardin shared in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, “Back to the Future was a huge disappointment. I was 17, you know. I burst into tears. It was very sad. There were quite a few of those lost roles that I remember, you know, things that never really got made. But that I remember being very tough.”

Earlier this year, during an appearance on The Joe Vulpis Podcast, Hardin mentioned that she was replaced because two female executives believed it was emasculating for their lead male character to be in scenes with a woman taller than him. Despite the disappointment, Hardin remains resilient, emphasizing the importance of embracing failure in the entertainment industry and continuing to strive for success.

In addition, Michael J. Fox shared in his memoir, Future Boy, that his co-star Crispin Glover, who portrayed George McFly, created friction on set. According to Fox, Glover had his own ideas about how his character should move, leading to tension with the camera crew. Fox also noted that he doesn’t recall anything about his final day on the Back to the Future set.
