Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – The Strange Klingon Tick Revealed by Paul Giamatti’s Villain

Star Trek has a rich history of memorable villains, from Khan Noonien Singh to Q and the Borg. Paul Giamatti is looking to add to that legacy with his character, Nus Braka, in the upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Nus Braka is a character of both Klingon and Tellarite descent, allowing Giamatti to draw from the entire history of Star Trek. One interesting aspect of Nus Braka’s character that caught Giamatti’s attention was the idea of Klingons standing too close to people.

“I remembered reading something about Klingons standing too close to people,” Giamatti shared with TrekMovie. “And I thought, ‘I’m going to stand too close.’ So I’m always getting way too close to people, invading their physical space.”

Although close-talking may seem more like a Seinfeld annoyance than a characteristic of a Klingon, Giamatti’s approach is rooted in the history of the Klingon characters in Star Trek. The early Klingons on The Original Series were haughty and imperious, setting the stage for more aggressive portrayals in later iterations of the series. Giamatti is a self-professed Trekkie and drew inspiration not just from the Klingons but also from other iconic Star Trek villains like Khan, Chang, Gul Dukat, and Q.

One unexpected layer that Giamatti brings to Nus Braka is a sense of a deeply angry and psychopathic child inside the character. This internal conflict reminded Giamatti of characters like Trelane and Q, who also have child-like qualities. How this complexity will play out in Nus Braka’s interactions with other characters, particularly Nahla Ake, remains to be seen.
