Amazon Prime $2.5 Billion Settlement: Payment distribution timeline

Amazon Prime members, listen up! It looks like Christmas might be coming early for some lucky folks this year, specifically those who are part of an Amazon Prime settlement. In total, up to 35 million Amazon Prime members could have some extra cash headed their way.

Eligible Prime members who managed to get in on the action will be receiving checks as part of a $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission. This settlement stems from the FTC accusing Amazon of using sneaky tactics to get customers to sign up for Amazon Prime and then making it extremely difficult to cancel the subscription. Of the $2.5 billion total, $1.5 billion is earmarked for consumer payments, while $1 billion is a hefty civil penalty that the FTC considers to be quite historic. As part of the agreement, Amazon must also put an end to the unfair obstacles related to enrolling and canceling Prime memberships.

FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson explained, “The evidence showed that Amazon used sophisticated subscription traps designed to manipulate consumers into enrolling in Prime, and then made it exceedingly hard for consumers to end their subscription. Today, we are putting billions of dollars back into Americans’ pockets, and making sure Amazon never does this again.”

While Amazon did not admit to any wrongdoing, they did release a statement saying that they have always followed the law and that this settlement allows them to move forward and focus on serving their customers. As of now, Amazon is starting to distribute checks to eligible U.S.-based customers, with payments ranging up to $51. If you qualify for an automatic refund, you should have received an email from Amazon prompting you to claim your payment via PayPal or Venmo, or through the mail.

This refund is for Amazon Prime members who signed up between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, and did not use Prime benefits, such as Prime Music or Prime Video, more than three times in a year. If you believe you are owed money but did not receive an automatic payment, there is still a chance you could qualify for a refund.
