CRTC Diversity Mandate Impacts Big Streaming Platforms
If you’ve been following the latest news in the world of streaming entertainment, you might have heard about the recent mandate from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). They’re requiring big streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon to start collecting data on diversity. It might not seem like a big deal, but historically, data collection often leads to the implementation of quotas.
This order stems from the passing of Bill C-11, also known as the Online Streaming Act, back in 2023. This law puts a greater emphasis on diversity in the broadcasting industry. It’s all about making sure that the Canadian content we see reflects the rich tapestry of our society. This includes representation from Black, racialized, and diverse ethnocultural communities, as well as people of different abilities, sexual orientations, gender identities, and ages. Indigenous perspectives are also highlighted in this legislation.
While the law doesn’t explicitly call for quotas and tracking, many are interpreting it as a step in that direction. The goal is to ensure that the programming we consume represents a wide range of voices and experiences. So, the next time you settle in for a binge-watch session, keep in mind that behind the scenes, efforts are being made to make sure everyone’s story gets a chance to be heard.
