Apple TV Not Interested in Ads or Acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery

Apple TV+ remains committed to original content and ad-free streaming. The service recently confirmed that it has no immediate plans to introduce an ad-supported subscription option. Eddy Cue, senior vice president of Apple Services, explained that maintaining competitive pricing without interruptions from ads is advantageous for consumers, although he didn’t rule out the possibility of an ad-supported tier in the future.

This decision distinguishes Apple TV+ from its competitors, many of which offer ad-supported plans to generate revenue. Disney Plus, HBO Max, and Paramount Plus, among others, provide ad-supported options, while Netflix has both ad-supported and ad-free subscription tiers. With its focus on original content and no ads, Apple TV+ is one of the few major streaming services without a budget-friendly, ad-supported model.

In an effort to support its original content strategy, Apple TV+ increased its monthly subscription fee to $12.99 in August, marking a 30% rise from the previous $9.99 price point. Since its launch at $4.99 per month in 2019, Apple TV+ has gone up by 160% in just six years. Despite these price hikes, Apple TV+ reportedly operates at a loss of over $1 billion annually, with expenses on high-quality shows surpassing revenue.

Despite financial challenges, Apple TV+ continues to attract critical acclaim and audience interest. The platform boasts popular series like Severance, which received 27 Emmy nominations this year. Apple TV+ remains committed to original programming, with Vince Gilligan’s new series Pluribus creating buzz after its premiere on November 7. Unlike competitors who rely on existing intellectual property, Apple TV+ emphasizes creating a library of original content to set itself apart in the streaming landscape.

When asked about potential acquisitions of companies like Warner Bros. Discovery, A24, or Disney, Cue indicated that Apple tends to focus on small acquisitions unrelated to Apple TV+. This approach aligns with Apple’s current strategy of prioritizing original content and maintaining a distinct identity in the streaming industry.
