Apple Executive Believes Sports Viewing Experience Has Declined

Eddy Cue, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Services, recently expressed his concerns about the current sports viewing experience, stating that it has regressed due to fragmentation among streaming platforms. In a speech at the Autosport Business Exchange in New York City, Cue highlighted the inconvenience of having to subscribe to multiple services to access different sports content.

According to Cue, consumers used to have access to a wide range of sports content through a single cable subscription. However, the proliferation of streaming services has made it more challenging for viewers to enjoy a seamless sports-watching experience. Cue believes that the solution lies in better collaboration and bundling among these platforms.

Despite these challenges, Apple is actively expanding its sports offerings, with recent exclusive deals such as acquiring U.S. rights to Formula 1. Apple TV+ currently costs $12.99 per month and also features Major League Soccer and MLB’s Friday Night Baseball.

Cue emphasized the importance of convenience and accessibility for sports audiences, particularly younger viewers. He suggested that simplifying the process of navigating between different broadcasting partners and implementing features like picture-in-picture could improve the overall viewing experience.

In pursuing sports rights, Apple takes a unique approach by aiming for complete ownership of a league’s rights portfolio rather than dividing them among multiple broadcasters. Cue acknowledged that while sports like F1 may have a smaller viewership in the U.S., their global appeal offers significant growth potential.

Ultimately, Cue’s message is clear: the sports industry needs more collaboration, bundling, and user-friendly features to enhance the viewing experience for fans. As Apple continues to make investments in the sports media landscape, Cue remains optimistic about the potential for growth and innovation in the industry.
