Disney+ and Hulu Cancellations Doubled During Jimmy Kimmel’s Suspension
If you’re a Disney+ or Hulu subscriber, you might have noticed a bit of a shakeup in September. Turns out, cancellations doubled that month compared to August. Why? Well, it seems like Jimmy Kimmel might have had something to do with it.
When ABC temporarily took Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air after a controversial monologue, it sparked a whole lot of cancellations for Disney+ and Hulu. The churn rate, which measures how many people are canceling their subscriptions, jumped from 4% in August to 8% for Disney+ and from 5% to 10% for Hulu in September.
It’s a big deal because usually, the churn rate stays pretty consistent from month to month. But Kimmel’s suspension caused quite a stir, with calls to boycott Disney and its streaming services. Even celebrities like Tatiana Maslany and Cynthia Nixon joined in.
Between the announcement of Kimmel’s suspension and his return, Disney reportedly lost over 1.7 million subscribers across Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN. And to add fuel to the fire, Disney then announced price hikes for Disney+ and Hulu. These hikes, which went into effect on Oct. 21, will make Disney+ and Hulu’s most basic tiers the priciest among major streaming services.
So, whether Kimmel, price hikes, or just general dissatisfaction is behind all those cancellations, it’s clear that September was a rocky month for Disney+ and Hulu users. It’s always tough when your favorite shows or services hit a rough patch, but at least you’re not alone in feeling the frustration!
