The Shocking Story Behind Netflix’s The Perfect Neighbor

“The Perfect Neighbor,” available on Netflix starting October 17, tells the story of a tragic incident involving a white Florida woman, Susan Lorincz, who fatally shot her Black neighbor, Ajike Owens, in 2023. This documentary is unique in that it uses police body camera footage to piece together the events leading up to the deadly confrontation without the use of talking heads.

Lorincz frequently called the police to report neighborhood children playing in a vacant lot near her home, claiming they were trespassing and harassing her. Despite her repeated complaints, officers responded with skepticism since she was the only resident with these concerns. The children were actually playing in her neighbor’s yard with permission, not on her property.

Neighbors reported that Lorincz would shout profanities at the children and even record them, causing distress among the community. The children, in turn, accused Lorincz of using slurs against them and even wielding an umbrella or a gun in their presence. This escalating tension eventually led to the fatal incident on June 2, 2023, when Lorincz shot Owens through a door, claiming she feared for her life.

The documentary delves into the events surrounding the shooting, questioning the actions of both Lorincz and law enforcement. Despite Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” laws, which permit the use of deadly force in self-defense, the presiding judge at Lorincz’s 2024 sentencing argued that her actions were more out of anger than fear.

Director Geeta Gandbhir, who was close to Owens’ family, aims to shed light on the shortcomings of law enforcement through this film. She questions why police did not intervene earlier, considering Lorincz’s behavior and previous calls for non-emergencies. Gandbhir emphasizes the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and addressing underlying issues within communities to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
