European Streaming Data Shows Concentrated Viewing Trends

New research published by the European Audiovisual Observatory sheds light on the European streaming landscape, revealing concentrated viewing patterns among major platforms. The report, titled “SVOD Usage in the European Union – 2024 data,” uncovered surprising insights about audience behavior on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and HBO Max in nine countries across Europe.

The most striking discovery from the study is the extreme concentration of viewership. Less than 0.1% of content available on these platforms captures approximately 14% of total viewing time. This challenges traditional advertising models that assume a more even distribution of content consumption.

According to the research conducted by Christian Grece and Jean-Augustin Tran from the European Audiovisual Observatory, a vast majority of streaming time is dedicated to live-action fiction series. In fact, 78% of viewing time is spent on TV and SVOD series, while films only make up 22% of total viewing time. Within the realm of fiction series, live-action content dominates, accounting for 88% of audience attention compared to documentaries and animation at 12%.

These findings have significant implications for advertisers looking to reach streaming audiences effectively. Understanding that most viewers are drawn to live-action fiction series helps advertisers tailor their campaigns to target the content that captures the majority of audience attention.

Despite the diversity of available content on these streaming platforms, the research found that viewer attention remains concentrated on a small number of popular titles. This means that while the catalogs of platforms may be vast, only a tiny fraction of works actually drive a substantial portion of total viewing time.

Additionally, the study revealed geographic disparities in European content consumption. European films tend to outperform European series, suggesting that advertising campaigns should consider content type when targeting specific markets. European content, both national and non-national, also displayed some intriguing consumption patterns that advertisers can leverage to reach audiences more effectively.

The research also highlighted that despite differences in content strategy and target audiences, major streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and HBO Max show consistent viewing concentration patterns. This means that regardless of the platform, viewers tend to gravitate towards a similar subset of content, challenging assumptions about platform-specific audience behavior.

Understanding these concentrated viewing patterns is crucial for advertisers aiming to make the most impact with their campaigns in the competitive streaming landscape. By aligning advertising strategies with the content that captures the most audience attention, advertisers can maximize the effectiveness of their campaigns and connect with viewers more meaningfully on popular streaming platforms.
