Andor Creator Fought for Season 2 Budget from Disney

“Andor” creator Tony Gilroy recently shared that the Disney+ series came with a hefty price tag of $650 million, but getting the budget for season two was no walk in the park. Gilroy opened up at the ATX Television Festival, highlighting the financial and creative struggles he faced.

For 24 episodes, Gilroy was able to bring his vision to life without any creative constraints. However, when it came to push the boundaries in season two, he had to stand his ground. Disney expressed concerns about the budget due to changing trends in streaming, leading to intense negotiations. Despite the challenges, Gilroy managed to maintain the creative freedom necessary to tell his story.

During the production of “Andor” season two, unforeseen circumstances, including writer and actor strikes, resulted in an additional $20 million budget increase due to shutdown costs. This series boasted individual episodes with an estimated cost of $20 million after tax incentives, aligning with other high-budget shows like “House of the Dragon” and “Severance.” With a total of 24 episodes across two seasons, “Andor” stood out for its ambitious storytelling.

Gilroy emphasized the significance of being able to delve into weighty subjects, noting that he could now use terms like ‘fascism’ more freely. While the rules concerning violence were relaxed from “Rogue One” to “Andor,” navigating sensitive topics like sex posed unique challenges. Gilroy recounted intentionally setting a scene in a brothel in the first episode to test the boundaries and explore creative possibilities.

The series finale of “Andor” aired on Disney+ in May 2025, concluding a prequel story centered around Cassian Andor and the Rebel Alliance. Gilroy’s journey to bring this tale to the screen reflects the delicate balance between creative expression and financial considerations in the fast-evolving landscape of streaming entertainment.
