Max Rebranding to HBO Max this Summer

Warner Bros. Discovery is changing things up this summer with the rebrand of its Max app back to HBO Max. This app has gone through a few transformations – starting as HBO entities, then becoming HBO Max in 2020, and just Max in 2023. Now, it’s back to HBO Max, recognizing the enduring popularity of HBO and its shows.

HBO has been around since the ’70s, initially known as Home Box Office, offering groundbreaking TV shows. As the streaming era took off, apps like HBO Now and HBO Go emerged. In 2020, these apps evolved into HBO Max. After a merger, Warner Bros. Discovery switched the app to Max in 2023, mixing HBO and Discovery+ content.

At the recent Upfront presentation in New York, Warner Bros. Discovery unveiled the rebranding of the app back to HBO Max this summer. The numbers speak for themselves – almost $3 billion in profit over the past two years, 22 million new Max subscribers worldwide, with a projected 150 million subscribers by the end of 2026. The key to their success has been focusing on the content viewers love, with a highlight on HBO shows, recent box-office hits, docuseries, reality series, and original content.

In a press release, Warner Bros. Discovery emphasized that quality over quantity is what sets them apart, with a nod to HBO’s consistent storytelling over the years. They even threw in a bit of humor, referencing the iconic “Friends” line, “We were on a break!” to add some levity to the situation.

This information was sourced from a Warner Bros. Discovery press release dated May 14, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates as HBO Max continues to evolve and provide top-notch entertainment for its subscribers.
