5 Seasons of Action Series Leaving HBO Max: Here’s What You Need to Know
Fans of the iconic animated series Samurai Jack are in for some disappointing news as HBO Max is set to remove all five seasons of the beloved action-packed show from its library later this month. This series made its debut in 2001 and quickly became one of the most iconic Cartoon Network programs with a lasting cultural impact.
Created by Genndy Tartakovsky, known for his work on Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack follows the story of a samurai prince who is sent into a dystopian future by the demon Aku. Armed with a magical sword, Jack sets out on a quest to find his way back to his time while battling various demons along the way. The show is characterized by its hand-drawn animation style, engaging viewers in a gripping narrative filled with fantasy and sci-fi elements.
Initially airing in August 2001, Samurai Jack ran for four seasons, each comprising 13 episodes. However, the series faced an unexpected halt as Season 4 concluded without a proper ending, leaving fans wanting more. This decision was influenced by internal changes at Cartoon Network during that time, leading Tartakovsky to step away from the project to avoid rushing the story’s conclusion. Instead, he and his team shifted their focus to develop Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Despite numerous efforts over the years to bring closure to Jack’s story through a film adaptation, these attempts proved to be unsuccessful. Fortunately, fans were rewarded in 2017 with the return of Samurai Jack for its final season. Season 5, comprising 10 episodes, delves into darker and more mature themes, set 50 years after the events of Season 4, with an older Jack who has lost his mythical sword.
The voice cast of Samurai Jack includes talented actors such as Phil LaMarr, Mako, Kevin Michael Richardson, Grey DeLisle, Tara Strong, Daran Norris, and Jeff Bennett. For Season 5, Greg Baldwin took over the role of Aku following the passing of the original voice actor, Mako, in 2006.
Throughout its five seasons, Samurai Jack garnered widespread acclaim, holding an impressive 93% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 95% Popcornmeter score. Additionally, the series received 10 Primetime Emmy nominations, securing victory in eight of them.
For fans of Samurai Jack, the impending departure of the beloved series from HBO Max serves as a bittersweet reminder of the show’s impact and legacy that will continue to resonate with viewers for years to come.
