Italian Court Rejects Netflix’s Price Hikes: Impact Worldwide

Netflix customers in Italy recently received some good news – a court in Rome rejected the streaming giant’s price hikes and ordered refunds for millions of subscribers. If you’ve been paying higher rates since 2017, this ruling could mean money back in your pocket.

The Court of Rome ruled that Netflix’s price increases from 2017 to 2024 were unfair and null, leading to rollbacks for premium and standard subscribers. The court sided with Movimento Consumatori, stating that Netflix didn’t have valid reasons for raising prices whenever it wanted.

Subscribers who have been with Netflix since 2017 could receive around €500 in refunds, with standard users getting €250 back. Netflix has 90 days to comply with the court’s decision, or they will face daily penalties. They are required to inform every affected customer, including former subscribers, through email and registered mail, and must publish the ruling on their website for six months.

Similar pricing issues are arising in other European countries, with Poland and Spain also facing challenges over subscription service practices. Despite Netflix’s intention to appeal, this ruling reflects a broader resistance in Europe against subscription services making price changes without proper justification.
