Prime Video to Limit HD Streaming for Basic Users

180 million Amazon Prime members recently received some news from the streaming giant. Amazon Prime Video is undergoing changes, requiring an additional $4.99 monthly fee for access to 4K video streaming. Previously, 1080p HD and 4K/UHD content was available to regular Prime members who paid $14.99 per month or $139 annually, with ad-free streaming available for an extra $3 per month. Now, the basic Prime Video package limits users to 1080p streams, while the ad-free experience is now called “Ultra.”

However, to sweeten the deal for those considering an upgrade, Amazon is offering Ultra members some exciting perks. These include a boost in offline viewing download capacity from 25 to 100, support for Dolby Atmos audio and Dolby Vision picture quality, and an increase in the number of streams allowed from a single account, from three to five.

But for basic Prime members not ready to make the jump to Ultra, there is still some good news. They will now have access to Dolby Vision support and can enjoy an extra stream, bumping up their total from three to four. It’s important to remember that true 4K streaming remains a challenge for many viewers due to various factors. So, whether or not the Ultra subscription is worth it depends on how much you value the enhanced viewing experience.
