Disney Animation Songs in Sign Language Debuting April 27 on Disney+

Disney fans, get excited! On April 27, Disney+ is set to release something truly special in honor of National Deaf History Month. Disney Animation’s ‘Songs in Sign Language’ will feature three beloved musical sequences from recent Disney films, reimagined and animated in American Sign Language (ASL).

The talented team behind this project includes director Hyrum Osmond, along with producers Heather Blodget and Christina Chen, collaborating with artistic director DJ Kurs and the incredible team at Deaf West Theatre in Los Angeles. Together, they’ve transformed iconic songs like “The Next Right Thing” from Frozen 2, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Encanto, and “Beyond” from Moana 2 into beautiful ASL performances.

Osmond, who led a team of over 20 animators on this project, shared that a lot of effort went into ensuring the animation stayed true to the original intention of the songs. This project is personal for Osmond, as his father is Deaf, and he sees this as an opportunity to connect with the Deaf community in a powerful way.

DJ Kurs from Deaf West Theatre also expressed the emotional significance of this collaboration. Bringing ASL into the world of Disney storytelling opens up new possibilities for Deaf children and audiences worldwide. By blending the universal language of Disney with the beauty of sign language, this project aims to break barriers and create meaningful connections.
