Sports Programming on Major Streaming Platforms Sees Significant Growth

Sports programming on major streaming platforms is taking off like never before, with a whopping 52% increase year over year on the top five SVOD services. This data comes from Gracenote, Nielsen’s content data unit, highlighting just how crucial live sports are for keeping audiences engaged.

Paramount+ has stolen the spotlight, surpassing heavyweights like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix in streaming sports content on an individual game and event basis. Thanks to its recent acquisition of UFC broadcast rights, Paramount+ now offers over twice the sports content of any other SVOD platform, marking a remarkable 219% growth compared to last year. On the flip side, Disney+ saw a decline of 23% in its sports catalog during the same period.

But the surge isn’t limited to subscription platforms alone. Even FAST channels, or free ad-supported streaming TV, have seen a 30% increase in sports content year over year. News channels have also seen a boom, with the number of dedicated news channels on FAST rising by over 200, resulting in a 58% increase in news programming. Movies and TV shows on FAST have also seen a healthy rise of 26% and 24%, respectively.

Gracenote’s quarterly analysis of programming availability on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, Netflix, and Paramount+ further underlines the trend of increasing content across these top SVOD services.
