Lionsgate sells Lionsgate Play streaming service to Rohit Jain
Lionsgate has announced the sale of its South Asian and Southeast Asian streaming platform, Lionsgate Play, to Rohit Jain, the executive responsible for developing the service during his time as president of Lionsgate Play Asia. The deal, disclosed by the studio on Tuesday, will see Jain take over ownership of the streaming platform, while Lionsgate retains its theatrical distribution and television production operations in these regions.
Jain has secured a multi-year licensing deal that allows him to continue using the Lionsgate Play branding and access content from the studio’s catalog for the streaming service. Lionsgate Play is currently active in several countries, including India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, and the Maldives. The platform primarily operates through partnerships with telecommunication providers, like JioHotstar, Airtel Xstream, and Amazon Prime Video Channels in India.
Looking ahead to 2026, Lionsgate Play has planned 100 premieres for the year, with a focus on expanding its regional Indian library by adding 25 new titles across several languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. The studio expressed its gratitude to Rohit Jain for his exceptional leadership in building and expanding Lionsgate’s business in India over the past years.
