Ruth Jones thrilled with debut acting role in Netflix show

Ruth Jones, best known for her role in Gavin and Stacey, is stepping into a new genre with her first drama role in the Netflix crime series Run Away. In the show, based on a novel by Harlan Coben, Jones plays the character of private investigator Elena Ravenscroft.

Despite her background in comedy, Jones expressed her excitement about tackling a dramatic role for the first time. The series has been a hit on Netflix, garnering over 12.7 million views since its release on January 1st, second only to the final season of Stranger Things.

Run Away follows the story of Simon Greene, played by James Nesbitt, as he teams up with investigator Elena Ravenscroft to find his missing daughter Paige. Talking about what drew her to the role, Jones shared, “I read the script and the first thing I saw of Elena is that she steals a dog from a park and that just appealed to my sense of humour.” She added, “There’s lots of different things going on for Elena so I just loved it straight away and I have never played that type of role before. I was just really excited.”

This adaptation marks the 13th book by Harlan Coben to be brought to the screen, with more on the way. Nesbitt praised Coben’s ability to create extraordinary worlds for ordinary people. He highlighted the thrilling and dark elements of Coben’s storytelling while emphasizing the human aspect that resonates with viewers.

Jones also shared her recent cameo on Radio 4 drama The Archers, a show she listens to every night. Despite being nervous about meeting the cast and potentially breaking the illusion of the radio drama, she found the experience to be delightful. Jones reflected on her past appearances on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, including a Gavin and Stacey takeover with James Corden and other cast members.

Jones’ transition to a dramatic role in Run Away has been well-received, showcasing her versatility as an actress beyond her comedic roots. With her engaging performance as Elena Ravenscroft, Jones continues to captivate audiences in this thrilling Netflix series.
