South Memphis to the Summit: New Documentary ‘Memphis to the Mountain’ on Hulu and Disney+
Memphis is about to take center stage in a powerful new documentary coming to Hulu and Disney+. “Memphis to the Mountain” is a three-part series directed by Zachary Barr that will hit screens on September 5th, shedding light on the incredible journey of a group of young climbers from South Memphis as they set their sights on conquering Mount Kenya—Africa’s second-highest peak at a jaw-dropping 16,000 feet.
Over the course of a year, viewers will witness the determination, hard work, and perseverance required for these climbers to achieve their goal. From training in climbing gyms and local walls to receiving mentorship from top climbers like Alex Honnold and Philip Henderson, this series showcases the grit and passion of these young climbers.
What sets this documentary apart is its deep connection to Memphis itself. Filmmaker Tom Shadyac, known for hit comedies like “Liar Liar” and “Bruce Almighty,” is co-founder of Memphis Rox, a nonprofit climbing gym and community center located in the heart of Soulsville/South Memphis. Teaming up with local leader Chris Dean, Shadyac has helped create a space at Memphis Rox that goes beyond just a gym—it’s a beacon of hope and empowerment for the community.
Behind the scenes, director Zachary Barr spearheads the project, with funding from Sender Films and Shady Acres Entertainment. Executive producers include Shadyac, Kelley L. Carter, Jason Aidoo, and Peter Mortimer, and the series finds its home at Andscape, the content studio overseeing the release.
Speaking about the documentary, Jason Aidoo, VP & Head of Andscape, shared, “Memphis to the Mountain is a celebration of what happens when you pour into a community and watch it rise. This story is a reminder that greatness exists within these neighborhoods, waiting to be unleashed.” Shadyac echoed this sentiment, stating, “Memphis to the Mountain is proof of the transformative process that occurs when young people are able to reach beyond their circumstances and discover the infinite potential that lies within.”
Producer Chris Dean added a poignant perspective, noting, “It isn’t just about conquering a mountain outside—it’s about scaling the walls inside each of us and finding the strength to become a fuller version of yourself.”
While Shadyac is known for his comedic hits, like “Patch Adams” and “Bruce Almighty,” his recent focus has shifted toward documentary work and social impact storytelling, with projects like “I Am” and “Brian Banks” showcasing this evolution.
For Memphis, “Memphis to the Mountain” represents more than just a film—it’s a testament to resilience, community, and the power of aspiration. Get ready to be inspired by this incredible story of triumph and determination coming to your screens soon.
