Disney+ Cancels Goosebumps After Two Seasons, Sony Seeks New Home for Series

Disney+ has decided to wrap up the spooky tale of Goosebumps after two seasons. The show, based on R.L. Stine’s popular book series, won’t be continuing on the streaming platform.

A joint production by Sony Pictures Television and Disney Branded Television, Goosebumps brought to life the eerie world of Stine’s books for a new generation. Each season introduced a fresh cast, a new mystery, and an intriguing storyline. Season 1 followed a group of high school students probing the death of a teen named Harold Biddle, while Season 2 revolved around twin siblings unraveling a bone-chilling mystery about four missing teens from 1994.

The second season starred David Schwimmer, Ana Ortiz, Jayden Bartels, Sam McCarthy, Elijah M. Cooper, Francesca Noel, and Galilea La Salvia, whereas the first season featured Justin Long, Rachael Harris, Zack Morris, Isa Briones, Miles McKenna, Ana Yi Puig, and Will Price.

While Season 1 had a strong start and even made it to Nielsen’s Top 10 original streaming list for four weeks, Season 2 didn’t quite reach the same level of viewership. Nevertheless, Goosebumps managed to accumulate an impressive 118 million viewing hours globally, with 75 million from the U.S. and 43 million from 16 international markets.

The show was brought to television audiences by Nicholas Stoller (The Muppets) and Rob Letterman (Detective Pikachu), who also served as executive producers alongside showrunner Hilary Winston (Community), Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty (The Boys), Scholastic’s Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman, Conor Welch (Platonic), and Erin O’Malley (New Girl).

Despite its cancellation on Disney+, Sony Pictures Television is looking to pitch Goosebumps to other platforms and explore creative options for the extensive intellectual property. With a wealth of over 200 Goosebumps books and spin-offs, there are plenty more eerie tales left to be shared.

The original Goosebumps book series remains one of the most successful of all time, with over 400 million copies printed in 32 languages. The franchise has previously inspired a beloved 1990s TV series and two theatrical films in 2015 and 2018, the first of which was directed by Letterman.

While it’s the end of the line for Goosebumps on Disney+, the saga might not be over just yet.
