NBCUniversal explores new sports cable channel for Peacock-exclusive content simulcast

NBCUniversal is reportedly considering bringing back a sports-dedicated cable channel, but with a twist. The Wall Street Journal reports that NBCUniversal is exploring the idea of launching a new channel that would simulcast exclusive live sports content from its streaming platform, Peacock. This move comes after NBCSN was shut down in 2021 as part of the shift towards streaming services.

While NBCUniversal has not officially announced these plans, sources familiar with early-stage discussions have shared details. The new channel would not exist as a standalone entity but would rather complement the Peacock streaming service. It would not be part of standard cable packages like ESPN or Fox Sports 1 but would be available as part of specific cable bundles, similar to DirecTV’s “MySports.”

The new network would not include regional sports network affiliations, at least initially. This means that channels like NBC Sports Washington, which has broadcast Washington Capitals games in the past, may not be included in the lineup. NBC Sports has a history of covering a variety of sports events, from NFL games to the Olympics, college football, soccer, and soon, the NBA.

Originally known as the Outdoor Life Network, NBCSN has undergone several rebrandings over the years, eventually becoming what it is today. If NBCUniversal moves forward with this new sports channel, it could provide fans with a new way to access exclusive live sports content, enhancing the offerings available through the Peacock streaming platform.
