Billy Joel discusses brain disorder treatment; health update from singer

Billy Joel recently shared some personal news about his health that led to the cancellation of his upcoming performances. The music legend, at the age of 76, revealed that he has been diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain disorder affecting his balance, making him feel “like a boat.”

In a candid interview on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, coinciding with the release of his documentary “Billy Joel: And So It Goes,” Joel mentioned that doctors are currently working on his condition. Despite his health struggles, Joel assured his fans that he feels fine, although his balance is a challenge.

When Maher asked Joel about the cause of NPH, he admitted that doctors are unsure, suggesting that he once thought it might be related to drinking. Joel, who has been sober for two years, emphasized that he is feeling good and downplayed the severity of the condition, referring to it as a brain disorder.

NPH is a condition involving excessive cerebrospinal fluid buildup in the brain, which can lead to neurological symptoms. Joel’s statement on Instagram in May explained that the recent concert performances exacerbated his symptoms, affecting his hearing, vision, and balance. As a result, he is undergoing specific physical therapy and refraining from performing to focus on his recovery.

Despite these challenges, Joel remains grateful for the support from fans and looks forward to returning to the stage in the future. His documentary “Billy Joel: And So It Goes” delves into his life, struggles, and music, providing a deeper insight into the iconic musician. Part one of the documentary is currently streaming on HBO Max, with part two set for release on Friday, July 25.

In the midst of his health journey, Joel continues to inspire fans with his resilience and passion for music. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back in the spotlight soon.
