The Tragedy of Star Wars: Underworld – George Lucas’ Cancelled Series
Fans of Star Wars have been buzzing lately about the cancelled TV show ‘Star Wars: Underworld’ that was in the works before Disney took over Lucasfilm. This series would have been a live-action show set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, exploring a side of the Star Wars universe beyond the Skywalkers, focusing on Coruscant’s criminal underworld and new character stories.
Back in 2005, George Lucas announced this ambitious project, along with The Clone Wars, but unfortunately, it was scrapped once Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. The series had over 60 scripts written, with big-name writers like Ronald D. Moore and Chris Chibnall working on it. Plans for the show were dark, gritty, and full of mystery, setting a different tone than previous Star Wars content.
Despite never making it to our screens, the legacy of ‘Star Wars: Underworld’ lives on in the hearts of fans who wonder what could have been. With the success of recent Star Wars TV shows like Andor and Ahsoka, maybe one day we’ll see Disney revisit this shelved project and bring us a fresh take on the galaxy far, far away. The hope remains that one day we might get a glimpse into the untold stories that ‘Star Wars: Underworld’ had promised to explore.
