The Punisher: Plot and Filming Update for Disney+ Special

New details have come to light about the Jon Bernthal MCU Punisher special.

In February 2025, it was revealed that Jon Bernthal will be reprising his role as Frank Castle/The Punisher in a new Marvel Special Presentation. While the plot details of the project are still a mystery, it’s unclear if it will premiere before, during, or after the second season of Daredevil: Born Again.

According to Nexus Point News, filming for the Punisher MCU special is scheduled to kick off in mid-July in New York City and will run until the first week of August. This timeline suggests that production will start shortly after wrapping up filming for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.

Although the storyline is being kept under wraps, rumors suggest that the series may follow Frank Castle as he escapes Wilson Fisk’s private prison. Recent reports have hinted at the casting of a female crime boss for the show, possibly the Punisher villain Ma Gnucci.

Ma Gnucci, created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, is known for her vendetta against Frank Castle after he eliminates three of her sons. It’s said that her character may lose all her limbs after an encounter with a group of polar bears, ramping up her conflict with the Punisher.

Director Reinaldo Marcus Green and Jon Bernthal are both involved in writing the Punisher MCU special, with Green set to direct. While an exact release date on Disney+ hasn’t been confirmed, fans can anticipate its arrival sometime in 2026.

Additionally, Bernthal will be returning as the Punisher in Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day, set to debut on July 31, 2026. Stay tuned for more updates on these exciting projects!
