Disney+ Series Showrunner Denies “Star Wars” Show is Left-Wing Political Story
The showrunner for the Disney+ series “Andor,” Tony Gilroy, recently addressed speculation about the political leanings of the show in an interview with New York Times columnist Ross Douthat.
During the chat on Douthat’s podcast “Interesting Times,” Gilroy expressed that he does not view the show as explicitly left-wing or a revolutionary piece against authoritarian government.
The series follows Cassian Andor, a key figure in the rebellion against the Galactic Empire, providing a gritty portrayal of how individuals come together to resist a government that uses deception and violence.
Douthat, however, felt that Gilroy’s depiction of rebellion in the show carried a left-wing perspective, given its focus on political themes and world history.
Gilroy acknowledged that the show was politically motivated, drawing inspiration from past revolutions and dictatorships, including his fascination with Mussolini’s regime.
Despite the political undertones, Gilroy emphasized that the Empire’s portrayal was not meant to be specifically right-wing, as the show delves into themes of authoritarianism and resistance beyond conventional political labels.
In a lively and thought-provoking discussion, Gilroy and Douthat explored the nuances of political storytelling in “Andor,” offering fans a deeper insight into the creative process behind the series.
