Disney Hiring Experienced Toronto-Based CanCon Producer for Kids Content

Disney Entertainment Television is on the lookout for a director of development in Toronto who will spearhead the Canadian content strategy for Disney+. This pivotal role requires a minimum of eight years experience in scripted content development, production, or commissioning, particularly with Canadian or international broadcasters and streamers.

As the lead commissioner for Disney+ Canadian originals, the successful candidate will have full creative oversight, responsible for everything from development to production and delivery of scripted and unscripted series. In addition to collaborating with Canadian production partners and funding bodies such as the CMF and Telefilm, they will stay up-to-date on industry trends and regulations affecting Canada’s media and streaming landscape.

Disney is seeking an individual with a deep understanding of the Canadian production scene, a robust network within the creative community, and a track record of shepherding projects from concept to completion. Since launching in Canada in 2019, Disney+ has yet to greenlight a Canadian original, despite previously setting the stage to do so when hiring former Telefilm national director Stephanie Azam as director of content in 2022. Unfortunately, a year later, all Canadian original commissions were paused, and Azam was let go.

This change in direction was likely influenced by two factors: the emergence of Bill C-11, which would subject SVODs to CRTC regulation and require investments in Canadian content, and Disney’s financial struggles. In 2023, the company underwent a massive cost-saving effort that resulted in thousands of layoffs. With 5.6 million Canadian subscribers, Disney+ has built a substantial audience in Canada, but has yet to significantly impact the local industry.

The new director of development has the potential to shift Disney+ into a platform that not only captures a sizable Canadian audience but also supports and fosters the local industry. If you are passionate about Canadian content, well-versed in the world of scripted development, and eager to make a mark in the streaming entertainment industry, this could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.
