Disney+ Impacts Legacy of Marvel Studios 3 Years Later

Three years ago, Marvel Studios hit a rough patch that changed how a lot of people saw the MCU. After dominating the 2010s with one hit after another, the studio’s jump to Disney+ brought a wave of interconnected series that had some mixed reviews. While some shows did well, there was one release in 2023 that really hit a sour note and had a lasting impact on Marvel’s future strategy.

‘Oversight Invasion’ premiered on June 21, 2023 and when the final episode aired on July 26, it was clear that it hadn’t quite hit the mark. For the first time in MCU history, critics, audiences, and pretty much everyone else agreed that it missed the target.

Before it aired, there was a lot of buzz around ‘Secret Invasion.’ Marvel Studios was really hyping it up as the franchise’s first “crossover event series,” something no Disney+ show had done before. With big names like Nick Fury, Maria Hill, and Rhodey, along with newcomers Gravik and G’iah, it seemed like a surefire way for Phase 5 to kick off on Disney+.

But when the show actually started, things took a turn. The death of Maria Hill in the first episode and Fury’s decision not to call in the Avengers didn’t quite sit right with viewers. There was also a surprise reveal about Fury’s secret marriage to a Skrull named Priscilla that didn’t quite land as expected.

The show’s main villain, Gravik, started strong but ended up feeling generic by the finale. And G’iah, played by Emilia Clarke, quickly became overpowered without much development. Rhodey’s storyline also took a hit, with a revelation that didn’t sit well with many fans.

‘Secret Invasion’ ended up being the first MCU project in 15 years to receive poor ratings from both critics and audiences. This forced Marvel Studios to rethink their approach and move on from certain storylines.

Nick Fury made a brief return in ‘The Marvels’, but the story didn’t really follow up on the events of ‘Secret Invasion.’ Emilia Clarke’s character may not see the light of day again, and Don Cheadle’s Rhodey faced backlash from fans that led to his character being put on hold.

Overall, ‘Secret Invasion’ didn’t quite hit the mark and fans are still talking about it years later as one of the lowest points in the MCU. The fallout from this misstep has led to changes in Marvel Studios’ plans moving forward.
