Simon Pegg reignites Lost debate with misunderstanding of show’s ending
Simon Pegg recently stirred up some debate in the Lost fandom by sharing his thoughts on the show’s ending. While Simon was a big fan of Lost, he wasn’t too keen on how it all wrapped up.
During a chat on the Dish podcast, Simon was asked which film or TV series ending he would rewrite, and how. Without missing a beat, he dove right into Lost. Recalling his past excitement for the show, he mentioned how JJ Abrams had even sent him the first season on DVDs before it aired on TV. But when it came to the ending, Simon felt a bit let down.
He mentioned, “But at the end of it, it just… spoiler alert if you haven’t seen Lost, but, you know, they were dead all along. I was like, ‘But that’s what everyone thought in the first series?'” Simon seemed to have misunderstood the show’s ending, falling into the trap that many disappointed viewers did in 2010.
In reality, the final scenes of Lost intertwined events on the island with an alternate timeline known as the flash-sideways. This exploration showed what would have happened if the plane had landed safely. The closing moments reveal that the flash-sideways is a place where the characters come together, remember their time on the island, and move on together to “whatever comes next.”
Despite somewhat grasping this plot twist, Simon seemed to miss the mark on what it truly meant. He suggested a different ending idea, essentially describing what had actually happened in the show. His idea involved the characters needing to die on the island to escape, then transitioning to an alternative universe. While Simon’s proposal was aligned with the show’s actual storyline, it’s clear that the Lost ending still holds a lot of complexity that may have been lost on some viewers, including Simon Pegg.
