Netflix Explores Always-On Live TV Channels to Enhance Viewing Experience
Netflix is thinking about adding always-on live TV channels to its lineup, as per a report from The Wall Street Journal. This new approach aims to give viewers a more traditional television experience, letting them tune in at any time instead of selecting specific shows. The move could also help Netflix compete with free streaming platforms like Pluto TV and Tubi, while potentially boosting their advertising revenue. On top of that, Netflix is exploring subscription bundles and potential partnerships with services like Peacock.
This move comes as Netflix tries different strategies to keep users engaged, including short-form videos, video podcasts, and even a gaming app for kids. They’ve been noticing declines in viewership between seasons of their original series, leading to these new efforts to maintain viewer interest. As of April, Nielsen reports that Netflix made up 7.8 percent of total U.S. TV viewing. Additionally, there are talks of Netflix possibly acquiring Letterboxd, a social platform for movie lovers, as reported by Variety.
