Bryce Harper talks new Home Run Derby format and bats leadoff in Cincinnati
Less than week until the Home Run Derby at Citizens Bank Park, and the big question is: Will Bryce Harper participate? That’s not the only lineup change, as Harper will be leading off against the Reds, giving the Phillies a different look at the plate.
In the past, Harper has had success in the Derby, finishing second in 2013 and winning it in 2018. However, the format has changed over the years. This season, hitters get 20 swings in the first round, dropping to 15 in the semifinals and final.
Harper prefers the timed format, saying it gives hitters a chance to find their rhythm. But the most critical factor in his decision is the pitcher. His dad pitched to him in previous Derbys, and finding that right connection is key.
If Harper does end up participating, he’ll likely switch to a normal bat for the competition, as his heavier one might tire him out too quickly. But for now, the decision remains open.
As for the game against the Reds, the Phillies are making some strategic moves to strengthen their bullpen. With Zack Wheeler’s dominant performance, they still need to shore up their relief pitching. Adding some new arms and activating Brad Keller should help ease the load.
All in all, while the Derby decision lingers, the Phillies are focused on winning their upcoming game against Cincinnati. Stay tuned for more updates!
