Amazon Removes “Deadly Patient” from Prime Video for AI Synchronization

Amazon recently made a move in response to user complaints about the synchronization of the thriller “Deadly Patient” on Prime Video. The movie’s German soundtrack, seemingly generated by AI, featured monotonous voices and awkward translations that left viewers unimpressed. After facing criticism on social media for days, Amazon decided to pull the film from its platform due to the poor quality of the synchronization.

According to reports, voice actor Sven Plate was among those who publicly criticized the AI-generated dubbing. His Instagram post calling out Amazon Prime for the subpar synchronization quickly gained over 10,000 likes. Clips highlighting the stylistic flaws of the synchronization have also been circulating on platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

It’s worth noting that Amazon clarified that the synchronization was not done by them directly, but likely came through the “Prime Video Direct” program, where external providers can publish their content on the streaming service. Despite the removal of “Deadly Patient,” the issue of AI-generated dubbing on Prime Video persists, with other films exhibiting similar problems, like those offered by the provider Reel One International.

This incident is not an isolated case in the entertainment industry. Other platforms like Deutsche Telekom and Netflix have also faced backlash for monotonous AI dubbing in their content. In fact, Netflix’s contract clause allowing the use of dubbing recordings for AI system training has led to a standoff with German voice actors. While some believe it’s necessary to adapt to AI dubbing, others see it as a threat to their profession.
