The Worst Superman Movie Ever on HBO Max: How It Hurt a Franchise and Studio

Before James Gunn revitalized the DC Universe and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel hit the big screen, Christopher Reeve was everyone’s Superman. Transitioning effortlessly from Clark Kent to the Man of Steel, Reeve’s portrayal in the first two Superman films directed by Richard Donner was nothing short of iconic. However, Reeve’s final Superman film, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, missed the mark entirely. The absence of Donner and Richard Pryor left the franchise in shambles until Superman Returns came along in 2006.

Superman IV kicks off with Superman unearthing the ship that brought him to Earth, discovering a powerful energy module with a one-time use. His visit to the United Nations results in a powerful message about the perils of nuclear weapons proliferation. The movie’s message is anything but subtle. When Lex Luthor is freed from prison by his nephew Lenny, they concoct a plan involving Superman’s hair, a genetic matrix, and a nuclear missile, giving rise to Nuclear Man. This new supervillain gets his strength from the Sun and has no qualms about taking on Superman, even resorting to using his superpowered nails for some dramatic effect.

Behind the scenes, money troubles plagued the production of Superman IV. The Cannon Group found themselves in a tough spot financially and couldn’t complete the film as intended. Christopher Reeve, who returned for a hefty paycheck, shared insights into the challenging production in his biography, Still Me, acknowledging the disappointment felt by audiences at the lower-budget result.

Originally, Superman IV was supposed to feature a different storyline involving Bizarro. The hints were clear with Luthor’s desire for revenge, Superman’s hair, and Nuclear Man taking orders from Lex. Unfortunately, the budget constraints led to major cuts, including scrapping a sequence featuring a more grotesque version of Nuclear Man resembling Bizarro. With a production budget of only $17 million, expectations were sadly dashed.

While Superman IV may not have been the success everyone hoped for, Christopher Reeve brought his own perspective and ideas to the table, drawing inspiration from Superman’s legacy in crafting the film’s story. Despite the film’s box office failure and the Cannon Group’s subsequent bankruptcy, Reeve’s legacy as Superman remains untarnished.

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is now available for streaming on HBO Max in case you want to see for yourself what a truly disappointing superhero movie looks like.
