Salt Lake City Police Investigate Peafowl Deaths, Residents Urge Charges
Residents in Salt Lake City are rallying together to seek justice for the beloved peafowls that call their neighborhood home. The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office is now looking into potential charges against an individual accused of intentionally harming these iconic birds that have been a fixture in Poplar Grove for close to a century.
The incident started on May 3 when a black Toyota Tacoma was caught on camera speeding down a neighborhood street and fatally striking a peacock. Sadly, three more birds have been hit and killed since then, sparking outrage among residents who have grown to love and cherish these beautiful creatures.
After a concerned resident confronted the driver of the vehicle, they were shocked to hear that the driver had been intentionally targeting and killing the peafowls with no regard for their significance to the community. This heartbreaking revelation prompted the community to take action and call for justice.
Even though peafowls are not protected wildlife in Utah, the community’s strong connection to these birds has led to a plea for authorities to review the evidence and press charges against the individual responsible for their deaths. The case has taken a complicated turn as authorities navigate jurisdictional issues and the unique nature of the situation.
Daniel Tuutau, chair of the Poplar Grove Community Council, emphasized the importance of protecting these cherished birds and ensuring that intentional harm towards them does not go unpunished. The community is united in their efforts to seek justice and preserve their shared heritage.
As the investigation continues, residents are hopeful that swift action will be taken to hold the perpetrator accountable and send a clear message that cruelty towards animals will not be tolerated in their neighborhood. With over 275 signatures on an online petition, the community is standing together in the fight for justice for their beloved peafowls.
