Daniel Kaluuya’s Unexpected Role on Jay-Z’s HBO Docuseries with Rick Rubin
Daniel Kaluuya, best known for his role in “Get Out,” is making a surprising move as an executive producer on Jay-Z’s upcoming HBO documentary series. The project, titled “JAŸ-Z IN 8,” is a collaboration between Jay-Z, renowned music producer Rick Rubin, and Kaluuya. While Kaluuya may seem like an unexpected addition to a music documentary, his connection to Rubin dates back to his appearance on Rubin’s podcast in 2023.
According to sources close to the project, after Kaluuya provided valuable feedback on early episodes of the series in 2024, Rubin decided to bring him on board as an executive producer for all eight episodes. The two have been working together on the project for over two years, showcasing Kaluuya’s interest and involvement in the music documentary world.
Both Rubin and Kaluuya are known for their enigmatic personalities. While Rubin is recognized for his spiritual practices in the studio, Kaluuya has displayed his passion for Jay-Z’s cinematic work, including watching films produced by Roc-A-Fella Records during his Covid lockdown in 2022.
In “JAŸ-Z IN 8,” Rubin takes on the role of the interviewer as he sits down with Jay-Z to delve into his music, lyrics, life experiences, and creative process. Jay-Z, who recently changed his name to JAŸ-Z, is set to embark on a tour in July, adding even more anticipation to the release of the documentary series.
Despite initial skepticism about Kaluuya’s involvement in a music-focused project, his partnership with Rubin and Jay-Z underscores his deep connection to the industry and his creative contributions to the upcoming series.
