NBA Media Partners Grading: Year One of New Rights Deal
A new chapter in the NBA’s media coverage began with the close of this year’s NBA Draft, marking the end of the first season under the league’s new media rights deal. It was a successful season for the NBA’s media partners, with high viewership numbers and positive stories across the board. From the NBA Finals on ABC to the NBA conference finals and All-Star Game on NBC, to the NBA Play-in Tournament on Prime Video, each partner had a reason to celebrate.
Let’s take a closer look at how each network performed this season as we grade the NBA’s media rights partners for the 2025-26 season.
Starting with ESPN/ABC, the longstanding partner of the NBA, we saw a noticeable improvement in their coverage this season. The previous season had its challenges, with issues surrounding the studio show and the lead broadcast booth. This year, however, ESPN seemed to address some of these issues, making necessary changes to improve the viewing experience.
One positive change was the absence of personalities like Stephen A. Smith and Kendrick Perkins, which helped in creating a more balanced and engaging studio show. Additionally, ESPN made a bold move by incorporating TNT Sports-produced “Inside the NBA” as its main studio show, bringing a fresh perspective and energy to their coverage.
While “Inside the NBA” is not without its flaws, with some criticisms of the modern game, it still provided viewers with insightful analysis and entertaining banter. Airing sporadically during the regular season and playoffs, the show struggled at times to find its rhythm but shined during the NBA Finals, delivering energetic and engaging postgame shows that captured the excitement of the moment.
Charles Barkley, in particular, brought his trademark passion and knowledge to the postgame shows, showcasing his deep understanding of the sport. Despite some of his controversial comments, Barkley’s enthusiasm for the NBA is undeniable, making him a respected figure in basketball broadcasting.
Overall, ESPN/ABC’s coverage this season showed marked improvement and provided viewers with a more engaging and dynamic viewing experience. As we look ahead to the next season, it will be interesting to see how they continue to evolve and enhance their NBA coverage.
