“Sesame Street Movie Coming to Netflix After Bidding War”
Netflix has won the rights to produce a Sesame Street movie after a bidding war with Universal Pictures. This classic children’s show will soon be added to the streamer’s lineup, thanks to a deal with Sesame Workshop. Rideback, a production company known for Live-action Lilo and Stitch and Aladdin, will be producing the film in collaboration with Sesame Workshop.
Details about how iconic characters like Elmo, Big Bird, and Cookie Monster will be part of the movie are still under wraps. It seems like we’ll have to wait a bit longer for any release date or information about the director of the film. The bidding war initially involved Netflix, Universal Pictures, and Warner Bros., with Warner Bros. dropping out early on due to acquisition issues.
Before Universal stepped away, they had Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert from Everything, Everywhere, All at Once as producers, along with Phil Lord and Chris Miller from The Lego Movie. However, these duos were never attached to direct. Netflix’s involvement in the project makes sense given their recent deal to bring new episodes of Sesame Street to the platform.
This isn’t the first time Sesame Workshop has tried to bring the show to the big screen. There were attempted projects in 2012 and 2016. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting collaboration between Netflix and the beloved Sesame Street characters!
