Netflix and Focus Pass on OpenAI-Sam Altman Film; Amazon Drops Movie

Both Netflix and Focus Features have decided not to acquire Luca Guadagnino’s movie “Artificial” after Amazon’s MGM Studios dropped the film abruptly. Sources have confirmed this information to The Hollywood Reporter.

As for A24, they have screened the film, but it’s unclear where they stand in the race to acquire this comedic drama from Sam Altman and OpenAI.

There are reports that Mubi is considering taking on the project, but there has been no official confirmation from Focus, Netflix, A24, Mubi, or Neon regarding their involvement.

Amazon’s MGM Studios announced that they would not be releasing the movie, which features Andrew Garfield as Altman and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk. They expressed their respect for Luca Guadagnino as a filmmaker and are working with the filmmaking team to find a new home for the film.

The decision to drop the film came from Amazon’s MGM Studios boss, Mike Hopkins, and was conveyed to Guadagnino and the producers. This move follows Amazon’s $50 billion investment in OpenAI, announced a few months ago.

As of now, the fate of “Artificial” remains uncertain, but discussions are ongoing to find a new studio to release this highly anticipated movie.
