Exploring AV: How the World Cup is sparking interest in 4K viewing

The current World Cup fever has taken over my household, as my housemates are die-hard football fans who insist on watching every match that falls within reasonable hours (luckily, no 2 AM games yet). This means my TV and Sky Stream box are on constant duty, and I’m loving it because my friends are suddenly enthusiastic about picture quality, thanks to the World Cup.

Typically, my discussions about resolution and HDR formats are met with eye rolls, but now, just a mention of watching the matches in 4K on BBC iPlayer gets them excited. I’ve been impressed with the sharp visuals and vibrant colors of the 4K streams from BBC iPlayer during most games. Currently watching the Czechia vs. South Africa match in 4K, and it’s truly a visual delight.

But why will I adamantly refuse to watch England games in 4K? Well, the issue lies in the broadcast delay. BBC iPlayer has a delay of approximately 30 to 40 seconds, while Sky Stream follows with a similar 35 to 40-second delay, compared to the mere 8 to 10-second delay of Freeview. This delay led to a few goal spoilers during a recent England vs. Croatia match when the cheering from my neighbors gave away the goals before I saw them on my TV.
