Director Nottapon Boonprakob on Netflix Thai Series ‘The Evil Lawyer’

Nottapon Boonprakob never thought much about the justice system before he started working on “The Evil Lawyer.” Watching courtroom proceedings and interacting with people involved in the legal system gave him a new perspective. He realized that the system, which seemed absolute and sacred from the outside, was actually deeply human and flawed.

“It became much more human,” he tells Variety. “We began to see the individuals who are part of the system – their faces, their life experiences, their perspectives on the world.”

In “The Evil Lawyer,” Boonprakob’s second Netflix original after “Mad Unicorn,” he explores the dissonance between the ideal of justice and the imperfect individuals responsible for upholding it. Produced by Songphon Jantharasom and co-directed by Jakkarin Thepvong, the show stars Rhatha Phongam as Jittri, a defense attorney known for exploiting technicalities to win cases. Nat Kitcharit plays Mek, a young lawyer whose faith in the system is shattered when he is framed for a murder he didn’t commit. Jittri, the so-called evil lawyer, agrees to take on his case under one condition: he must work for her.
