Milford Haven postal worker sentenced for illegal streaming operation

A recent case about illegal streaming brought a postal worker in Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, to the spotlight. Michael David Barrow was at the center of a sophisticated piracy business that involved selling illegal hardware and apps for sports streaming at a fraction of the cost of legitimate subscriptions. He managed to pocket over £200,000 from this scam, impacting well-known broadcasters like Sky Sport, TNT Sport, and BT Sport.

Despite being warned by the authorities and even having his Facebook account suspended for violating intellectual property rules, Barrow continued to run his illegal streaming business. The judge, in this case, sentenced him to 38 months in prison, highlighting the large-scale fraud driven by greed.

This operation involved providing customers with apps and modified Amazon Fire TV Sticks, a device that normally offers access to legitimate services like BBC iPlayer and Netflix. Barrow, however, enabled his customers to unlawfully stream content from major broadcasters, live events, and a library of over 18,000 films by using his services.

The court heard that more than 1,800 customers bought Barrow’s “subscription and hardware” package, priced at around £120 a year, significantly less than what legitimate broadcasters were charging. He was selective with new customers, accepting them only through recommendations and insisted on using full names to avoid detection.

Payments were made through PayPal or bank transfer, with hidden references such as “classic or retro football kits” to disguise the transactions. Barrow also possessed substantial technical knowledge and could advise customers on bypassing anti-piracy measures put in place by broadcasters.

Although financial losses to legitimate broadcasters like Sky Sport, BT Sport, and TNT Sport were estimated to be in the region of £6 million, he was ultimately sentenced to 38 months in prison. Despite expressing genuine remorse for his actions and seeking help for mental health issues, it was clear that Barrow’s motivation was driven by pure greed. He will serve 40% of his sentence before being released on license.
