Criminal Minds Season 19: Will Reid or Anyone Else Return?

Criminal Minds: Evolution is gearing up for its 19th season, and fans are wondering if any familiar faces from the original series will make a comeback. In Season 18, we saw Matthew Gray Gubler briefly reprise his role as Dr. Spencer Reid for a special moment with JJ at her husband’s funeral. But will we see more of the original cast in Season 19? Unfortunately, the answer is no.

Showrunner Erica Messer explained that due to the fast-paced nature of the upcoming season, with only 10 episodes that may not translate to 10 full weeks of storytelling, it wasn’t possible to bring back any more familiar faces. However, this doesn’t mean we won’t see them in the future, as Messer hinted at a Season 20.

When Criminal Minds returned with Evolution, we did get to see familiar faces like A.J. Cook, Paget Brewster, Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, and Adam Rodriguez reprising their roles as series regulars.

In Season 18, Gubler’s return as Reid was brief but impactful, with minimal dialogue conveying the significance of his presence. Cook mentioned that having Gubler back felt like a homecoming and emphasized the importance of their on-screen connection.

Gubler himself expressed his joy at being able to work with his Criminal Minds family again, showcasing the strong bond between the cast members.

As Season 19 of Criminal Minds: Evolution approaches, we can’t help but wonder which original characters we’d love to see return. Who are you hoping to see make a comeback in the future? Let us know in the comments!

Don’t forget to catch the Season 19 premiere of Criminal Minds: Evolution on Thursday, May 28, only on Paramount+.
