Danielle Brooks: Leading and Producing “American Comfort” Soul Food Comedy

Danielle Brooks is stepping into a new role that we can’t wait to see unfold. Apple TV+ is bringing us American Comfort (working title), a soul food comedy inspired by Melba Wilson, the iconic Harlem restaurateur. The series, created by black-ish’s Kenya Barris and produced by Oprah Winfrey and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, will star Brooks and she’ll also executive produce.
American Comfort centers around Melba’s Restaurant, a beloved Harlem establishment known for serving up delicious soul food and fostering community. Brooks will portray Melba Wilson, the force behind the restaurant’s cultural impact.
Penned by Barris, the show delves into the humor, heart, and day-to-day trials of running a Black-owned neighborhood institution. Executive producers include Barris, Leyah Barris, Oprah Winfrey, Carla Gardini, Aaron Kaplan, Melba Wilson, Neema Barnette, and Aisha Summers-Burke.
Melba Wilson, a James Beard Award-nominated chef, has grown her flagship Melba’s Restaurant from Harlem to other locations in New York, solidifying its spot in the city’s culinary and cultural landscape.
