WNBA Media Deals Surpass $3 Billion in Total Value

WNBA Media Deals Now Exceed $3 Billion in Total Value

The WNBA has definitely hit it big with their latest series of media deals!

These groundbreaking partnerships have really paid off, adding over a whopping $900 million to the league’s media deal values. Can you believe it?

Word around town is that over $3.1 billion is in play now with entertainment powerhouses like Disney (ABC/ESPN), NBCUniversal (NBC/Peacock), Amazon (Prime Video), Paramount (CBS), Scripps (Ion), USA Sports (USA Network), and good ol’ NBA TV. A top-notch source in the know confirmed all of this—ain’t that something?

Picture this: the new media deal averages $281 million every year! That’s 6.5 times more than before. With CBS, Scripps, and Amazon on board, last year alone saw the league rake in about $60 million in media revenue.

Flashback to July 2024, when the WNBA strutted into town with a massive $2.2 billion, 11-year media bonanza by joining forces with Disney, NBCUniversal, and Amazon, all part of a broader $77 billion NBA deal. Fast forward a bit, and USA Sports jumped on the bandwagon while Scripps and Paramount renewed their vows, raising the stakes to $3.1 billion.

Now here’s the kicker: these deals come with built-in “re-set” options once we hit 2028. Everyone can come back to the table to hash out the nitty-gritty details, from duration to costs, but it’s still hush-hush on who gets first dibs.

And you know what? There’s even a revenue-sharing clause in the works, opening the floodgates to potential revenues over and beyond that $281 million. They’ve decided that the league deserves a slice of the advertising and sponsorship cake anytime a partner “recoups its financial investment.” Sweet!

Get your calendar ready because this season’s got a record 216 national games lined up for all the fans out there. The game’s already afoot since last Friday, with champions like Ion leading the charge with 50 games and USA Network following closely behind with 48.

As for the playoffs, everyone’s invited! ABC/ESPN, USA, NBC/Peacock, and Prime Video are all splitting the loot as follows:

• First round: ABC/ESPN (two series), USA Network, and Prime Video (one series each)
• Semifinals: NBC/Peacock and ESPN/ABC (one series each)
• Finals: NBC (Games 1 and 4), USA (Games 2, 3, 5–7), and Peacock (all games)

And a fun fact here—the WNBA Finals will be shining on our screens without a Disney network this year, a first since back in 2000. Who knew?

Now, not all that glitters is gold because, let’s be frank, a plethora of partners from free TV to cable to streaming can come with its fair share of challenges. Our go-to person, Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, mentioned that she believes in the magic of “consolidation over time” so that we’re all in this together, folks!
