Producer of “War of the Worlds” Stands Up for Ice Cube Film Amid Negative Critics
Ice Cube’s ‘War of the Worlds’ had a rough go with the critics, but Timur Bekmambetov, the creative genius behind the film, recently shared his thoughts on its less-than-glowing reviews. The movie, a loose adaptation of H.G. Wells’ sci-fi classic about an alien invasion, debuted on Prime Video in July. Starring Ice Cube, Eva Longoria, and Clark Gregg, and directed by Rich Lee, the film was not met kindly by critics and currently boasts a mere 4 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. To add insult to injury, it also snagged five Razzie Awards, including the unfortunate title of worst picture of the year.
Bekmambetov, known for his work on films like ‘Wanted’ and ‘Mercy,’ recently participated in a Reddit AMA to chat about his latest project, ‘LifeHack.’ As a producer on the film, Bekmambetov discussed his involvement in the upcoming thriller directed by Ronan Corrigan, which navigates the murky waters of a crypto heist and is set to hit theaters next week after debuting at last year’s SXSW festival.
During the Reddit AMA, Bekmambetov fielded multiple questions about ‘War of the Worlds.’ When asked about his feelings towards the film, he responded, “The criticism of ‘War of the Worlds’ didn’t surprise me.” Despite the movie’s less-than-stellar reception, Bekmambetov acknowledged that the three weeks at number one on Amazon Prime was still something to celebrate.
While ‘War of the Worlds’ may not have been a smash hit with the critics, it’s clear that Bekmambetov’s focus is on creating engaging and thrilling content for audiences to enjoy. Hopefully, his upcoming projects will be received with more enthusiasm!
