HBO Max Momentum Boosts Paramount+ ahead of Merger
HBO Max is experiencing a surge that bodes well for the upcoming merger with Paramount. In its recent report, Warner Bros. Discovery revealed robust revenue of $8.89 billion. While the loss per share was wider than expected, the 29% rise in profits is nothing to scoff at.
The $110 billion Paramount merger has garnered shareholder approval and is set to be finalized by the third quarter. Paramount CEO David Ellison stands to gain a prosperous streaming and film business from Warner Bros. Discovery, which has been flourishing.
David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, highly praised HBO Max as a significant growth asset. He believes that merging with Paramount will enhance the consumer experience. Together, Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery will have a combined total of over 200 million streaming subscribers, rivaling Disney’s second place but still trailing behind Netflix.
The first-quarter results show why Paramount was eager to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. The decision to go with Paramount was evident as charges related to the pending deal had widened Warner Bros. Discovery’s net loss. Even with challenges like audience declines and losing the NBA, the revenue held strong thanks to an increase in content revenue.
While the merger has received shareholder approval, regulatory approval is still pending. The deal is under review by regulators in the U.K. and the U.S. state attorneys general are also scrutinizing it. If the deal doesn’t close by September 30, there will be a “ticking fee” for shareholders until closing. Similarly, if the deal falls through entirely due to regulatory reasons, Paramount will owe a significant termination fee to Warner Bros. Discovery.
Despite uncertainties surrounding the merger, streaming revenue is thriving. With an increase in ad-lite subscribers, a price hike, and HBO Max’s international expansion, streaming revenue climbed 9%. The subscriber count is expected to surpass 150 million by the end of the year.
Overall, the future looks bright for both HBO Max and Paramount as they prepare to join forces in a robust merger that will shake up the streaming landscape. This merger has the potential to drive significant growth and innovation in the streaming industry.
