AMC and Cinema United endorse wide theatrical release window as Netflix delays ‘Narnia’

Netflix has made a big change in releasing Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, moving it from November of this year to February 2027. This move not only honors an exclusive Imax slot but also gives exhibitors a 49-day exclusive theatrical window before the film hits the streaming platform.

Originally set to open on November 26, the movie will now have a one-day exclusive Imax release on February 10, followed by a global opening in participating cinemas on February 12, and finally debuting on Netflix on April 2. Netflix expressed full support for Greta Gerwig and her vision for Narnia, stating that the delay provides an opportunity for an expanded, wide release with a full theatrical window.

The rescheduling was prompted by a production delay due to a health issue affecting a cast member on set. This issue has been resolved, and Netflix maintains that the date change does not signal a change in their theatrical release strategy.

Both AMC and Cinema United have shown support for this decision, with AMC CEO Adam Aron emphasizing the significance of Netflix’s attempt at a global release for a major film title. Cinema United commended Netflix for bringing Narnia to the big screen, noting the movie’s appeal to audiences worldwide.

The film adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew is a first-of-its-kind treatment of the novel, delving into the origins of Narnia. Starring a mix of newcomers and seasoned actors like Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep, this adaptation promises to bring the beloved story to life in a whole new way.

With this new release strategy, movie fans can look forward to experiencing Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew in theaters before it becomes available for streaming, offering a unique and exciting viewing experience for all.
